The Boston Red Sox completed their comeback Sunday night with an 11-2 win over the Cleveland Indians to claim the American League championship for the second time in four years. Trailing 3-1 in the series, the Red Sox scored three runs in the first three innings, then held off the Indians. Clinging to a one-run lead in the seventh, rookie Dustin Pedroia hit a two-run home run over the left field Wall. Hideki Okajima worked two scoreless innings in relief before giving way to closer Jonathan Papelbon with two on and no outs in the eighth inning. Papelbon struck out Travis Hafner, got the dangerous Victor Martinez to ground out and retired Ryan Garko and a fly ball that Jacoby Ellsbury tracked down in front of the bullpen. Boston blew the game open with six runs in the eighth on a double by Mike Lowell, a single by J.D. Drew, a bases-loaded double by Pedroia and a two-run homer by Kevin Youkilis. Papelbon finished the Indians off for his only save of the series. The win went to Daisuke Matsuzaka, who gave up two runs in five innings. Josh Beckett, who won Games 1 and 5, was named the Most Valuable Player of the series. The World Series opens Wednesday night at Fenway Park.

While Daisuke Matsuzaka continued to struggle, his teammates made Indians journeyman Jake Westbrook look like Cy Young. Westbrook held the Red Sox to two runs in 6 2/3 innings and Cleveland took Game 3 of the American League Championship Series, 4-2. The Indians lead the series, 2 games to 1. Cleveland scored a pair of runs in the second off Matsusaka on a single by Ryan Garko and a home run by Kenny Lofton. The Indians added two more in the fifth on two singles a walk and a fielder's choice. Boston manager Terry Francona pulled Matsusaka and brought in Mike Timlin, who struck out Garko to end the inning. In the Boston 7th, JD Drew singled to centerfield with one out and Jason Varitek slammed a two-run homer off Westbrook. After Julio Lugo reached on an infield hit, Jensen Lewis came on in relief and struck out Dustin Pedroia. Cleveland reliever Rafael Betancourt set down the heart of the Red Sox order 1-2-3 in the 8th. Kevin Youkilis went down on strikes, David Ortiz lined out hard to right and Manny Ramirez was retired on an infield popout. Indians closer Joe Borowski nailed the door shut with a 1-2-3 ninth Boston hit into three rally-killing double plays. Game 4 is Tuesday night at Jacobs Field. First pitch is at 8 pm on FOX.
