"Peter, we have got a question for you. We are curious. We have a right to know. We have a little wager going here and wonder if you could settle it for us? Weve been wondering something about Jesus. Does he or does he not pay the temple tax?"

On this day in 1880 Boston celebrated its 250th birthday. For three and a half hours during the day, a column of 14,500 people marched four-and-a-half miles though the city. The festivities continued that evening with a parade of 1,000 torchbearers and 16 floats depicting the city's history. At a gathering at the Old South Meeting House , the mayor observed that "scarcely a feature of the landscape remains to tell us how nature looked before she was subdued by civilization. The sea has been converted into land; the hills have been leveled -- the valleys filled up, the sites of the Indian wigwams are now those of the palaces of our merchant princes." Indeed, in 250 years, Boston had grown from a tiny settlement to a major metropolis.

From billion-dollar nonprofits to single person causes, there is a growing worldwide movement of organizations dedicated to restoring the environment and fostering social justice. This is a movement with no name, leader, or headquarters, but it can be seen in every city, town, and culture. It is organizing from the bottom up and is emerging as an extraordinary and creative expression of shared values worldwide. What are the driving forces behind these developments? Can the interests of these organizations translate into effective government policies and profitable businesses? Paul Hawken, environmentalist, businessman, and founder of the first natural foods company addresses the creation of a worldwide grassroots movement based on hope and humanity. I'm back after a break with another look behind the scenes in Boston. Thanks to all of you who emailed me suggestions and supportive comments (don't worry -- I'm not going away!). I took a short break, but I'm back now with a show that is just packed full of history. Boston's Omni Parker House Hotel sits at one of the oldest intersections in Boston on the site of America's first public school. The hotel itself was the first luxury hotel built in America, and is now the oldest operating hotel in the country. Throughout its 150-year history, Omni Parker House has housed, fed, or employed such famous names as Longfellow, Dickens, Kennedy, Emerson, Roosevelt, Curley, Ho Chi Minh, John Wilkes Booth, and dozens more. The hotel is now the flagship property of the Omni Hotels chain, and remains one of the places to stay in Boston. I stopped by for a short stay and a talk with one of their staff members about the place. The hotel has such an involved history that the "Brief History" pamphlet they gave me is almost 50 pages long, so lets call this episode a snapshot of America's oldest hotel.
