Here and Now for Monday, January 28, 2008

The race for the presidency is moving from retail to wholesale as candidates begin to turn their attention to Super Tuesday, when about half of all delegates to the party conventions will be chosen in coast-to-coast primaries. We'll talk with Richard Wolffe, Senior Political Correspondent for Newsweek. We ask "What do you want President Bush to say tonight?" We revisit people we've spoken to in the past on our program -- we'll hear from a nature guide in rural Maine who says the price of fuel needs to addressed; a nurse in Oregon talks about patients she sees who don't have health insurance; and a vet from Afghanistan talks about the economy here in the US and her job prospects. These are just some of the people we talk to about the State of the Union, 2008. On the eve of the Florida primary, we look back to the disputed 2000 presidential election in the Sunshine State. That election is one of the Great Moments in Campaign History in the new issue of U.S. News and World Repor

Here and Now for Wednesday, December 12, 2007

Republican presidential candidates spar today in their last debate before the Iowa caucuses next month. The debate is the first since the recent surge in the polls by former Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee, who is coming under increasing scrutiny for his comments on the Mormon religion, AIDS, and immigration. We speak with Kay Henderson, News Director for Radio Iowa. We visit with Vincent Mannion, a private in the U.S. Army who suffered a traumatic brain injury during a bomb blast in Iraq. In a case that may set precedent throughout the military health care system, his family sought and won approval from the Army to have Vincent cared for at a private rehabilitation hospital in Boston. The family felt Vincent could get better care there than at the VA. We talk with Vincent's mother, Maura, his sister, Colleen, his step-father, Jeffrey Brodeur , and Marilyn Spivak, founder of the Massachusetts Brain Injury Association and outreach coordinator for Boston's Spaulding Hospital TBI re
