" Good Friday October ninth 2009. My name is Christopher -- thank you for tuning into the financially podcast got a different. Different multiple change of procedure we're gonna region with a -- I've really been enjoying these single topic focused podcast we've been doing the last few weeks with the a personal finance guide for two weeks and then an interview with that Maria and evangelists seamless. And I think wanna keep that format rolling as opposed to a summary of the news which frankly can get DeLia financially news.com along with the dealer scholarship listings so. Instead what I think of what to do with the financially podcast is evolve into more of sort. Recall ever green topics -- useful no matter where and you hear them. So I think you're going for a going to be working with that on Tuesday. I had the opportunity to speak to students at Bentley university about the economy and jobs. As many of the students in the class will be graduating this coming year and entering the job markets -- put together a list of like all the digital foundations. Four career success and we'll slow let's -- that."
" Okay."
" Yeah. So digital foundations for career successes my sort of way of explaining that. There are things you can do in the online format that are gonna be helpful to you as you get your career started and the best time to do a lot of things. Is while you still school because as little free time as you think you might have widened in college how much much less free time once you graduate year act in the workforce. So these things that you can be doing now to help your career prospects move forward when the time comes undergraduate and doesn't matter when you do it in fact the earlier you do with the better off you are. If you are interested in an industry or a profession or something like that and you know. That you wanna pursue it by marketing advertising PR accounting. Anything like any any professional -- really. He's ideal for doing these sort of digital foundations. It starts number one with buying a personal domain name having your own essentially to mean that identifies you -- myself I don't Christopher SPN dot com. Just because I wanted to have that digital property secured. -- know whatever your name is -- by almost names like John Smith in which case -- gonna have to -- of that as some kind of variation on that but. It's relatively inexpensive to do. And you can get domain names are -- seven dollars and fifty cents a year give or take. The second thing you would do is once you buy domain name is and get a web hosting account and start a blog of some kind -- you can you can DOS these free services like word press dot com and things like that but. It's generally better if you're financially able to do so to to buy your own hosting account. There are services like to -- dot net that's at TU BU dot net and offer website hosting a blog posting for as little as ten dollars a year. Which it is when you think about it less than a dollar a month so it's certainly something that's very affordable for anyone to do. Once you start a blog -- a personal journal. You want to start blogging about things that are relevant your profession that showed you -- some level of insight. Into the profession you wanna go into so let's say you are AP a student studying up public relations and you want to get into the -- relations profession when you graduate. If you'd be good idea to start blogging about PR war -- to blog about. Initially wanted to easiest things to do is to read up on a lot of what's going on in that particular industry some popular stories big stories and then offer your own commentary and opinion on that if you go to financially news.com you'll see. What I do in the daily updates. Is I'll take a news article or a segment of a news article that is -- is happening in the -- and this is a commentary section beneath it. That says -- here's my opinion about what this is or here's my interpretation of what this means. It is important to do that is get started because obviously if you're not working in PR. You don't have any real life case studies to work with a -- one -- use the news of things as ways to get ideas jumps out to. The third thing you'll wanna do FT got you blogs that you -- personal website and is. Start a Linkedin profile now Linkedin dot com is eight careers and social service it's if it's like. I like to call like that the of the FaceBook of -- business these are people actually get things done. It also has -- component as an example so -- can upload your resume. Initially you're not gonna have a lot to put on the particularly feel like a freshman or sophomore and a is not gonna have a lot of stuff besides your average summer job connecting and that's okay. What you wanna do is with the Linkedin profile. As you do things through your college career whether it is running a club wedding -- a volunteer group doing any kind of fall to work and nonprofits is a great way to put some experience on their. Any kind of summer jobs are working all the stuff will go in there. And the key with Lincoln. That makes so much more powerful than say just a resonate by itself. Is that you can ask for recommendations so after you've worked for a nonprofit if you volunteered to some time or have you worked summer job. You would go to your supervisor Revver and ask for recommendation if obviously did a good job defeated a crap job that he's awfully -- want to mention it on a resident. But up. In this is takes really a place of references because what the future employers are checking out your profile on linked and they can see the recommendations right on that. They don't have to work particularly hard to see -- Jane -- did a fantastic job in as he entered in accounts receiving. And who would be true asset to any company that kind of thing. And it is the sort of thing he was -- Linkedin recommendation. Number four. Think about attending conferences in you were field there are conferences conventions and and business beings that are happening all the time in every major city. In the United States there are sixty to eighty conference is happening -- DA now. They are probably. One to two big name shows in your industry and for example one of the biggest shows that I know of is the industrial concrete show. This is now 100000 person conference where folks who are special some concrete -- get together. You know a couple times a year and they talk about what's -- the world concrete which sounds like could be incredibly boring. But when you think about the number of things around you that are made of concrete you realize that's pretty big business and so of course it's going to be a tremendous alleged trade -- You'll probably when you look at the trade just outside -- Astounded at the price to attend until 700 dollars 2000 dollars things like that but almost every traits of the big ones anyway. -- student rates -- student discounts where you can get in for a relatively little money in some shows have as laws have a valves to ninety Willie and for free. So you can check out the industry in and wander around you may not be able to go to some of that. That the top level sessions and stuff like that but you can go to the the show itself freak. Start talking to peoples in learn about what's happening in your profession. One of the -- the stealth job if prospecting things as as a student go to the traits of go to the expo floor which is where all the vendors are in that industry and with your own stack of you know business cuts you've made. Walker and introduce yourself. And ask people know hey what's new in the industry. Or if you want to eat you can even do a bit of reporting that you have your your personal professional block that you're working on four and again going back to the PR industry. -- that you're blocking about PR go to one of the trade shows and with a list of two or three questions that you want to ask people. At the show. Let's say -- I'm doing a series of blog posts on my blog about what's happening and in PR which you to have some time to email you a couple questions that I could. I ask you for my block. As a college student. This does two things one. It gives you legitimate insights into what's happening in the PR industry from professionals who are currently working NPR which is good -- you've content to work with for your buck and two. Quite doing it that way it means that you also have a contact of that person so when it comes time to job hunt will that later on to say hey remember when I did an article from. We did an interview together. A few months ago about what's happening PR. I start to look for ya appear jobs now and if you happen to anyone in the industry you get they had. Number five the beat cognizant. These very cognizant of what you'd digital history shows as something that a lot of people harp on over the years but is. -- getting increasingly more important. If there are photos of you laying down on ethnic Indian -- to your own vomit. On FaceBook or Flickr any of the photo sharing -- take them out. Taken down make him go away if you have friends who -- putting stuff like that up to -- to ask them to take it down too because. The search engines like Google. Have a very long memory what you wanna do -- much as possible in a make sure things like that don't show up associated with your name and beat. If there are things like that make them go away as fast as it possibly can because employers who -- Google press prospective vote candidates. Will find things like that and that's probably not the way you wanna start off and into the sit down sale of tell him later as me and tell me about this photo. If -- holding up are you going. That. Doesn't really look like me of course obviously you want to avoid anything online. That could cause you reputation on damage and it's easy to do as long as you -- us think about pulpit. Finally number six again why you in school could happens to get in to start managing your finances online there are so many. Good financial sites out there that a free that as we sobbing in minted GGO and all these different services that are completely and totally for free. Will let you manage to find us online and give you recommendations about how to change your spending and stuff like that. Grab a copy of our personal finance got -- student platinum dot com. But no matter what just didn't have to start to my manager finance while you still school while the pressures of daily life and he unions and employed person not you know. Piling on you while you still have for the good bit of breathing room to develop good habits. Brief personal finance tools that are are minor so easy use compared to like the old personal finance managers used to have to download back and -- These new ones are incredibly easy so much of it is done for you disconnect your bank account. And it will stop you start organizing sorting things looking recommendations like. You'll see it pizzeria -- or whatever on Nancy this is probably food item funny dining -- item can I auto categorize it as dining out and we'll do it for -- And he'll prepare reports -- pretty charts and things like that you like pretty charts. But really important to get in the habit of doing that the other thing that goes with that obviously is that if you have. Eight debit card -- pain physical cash dollar bills. Use a debit card because the transactions get locked to your bank account and then you back Caltrans and the data to your personal finance manager. No it's not a credit card don't we don't start putting -- spending a credit card that is the need -- financial ruin that is very fast but. A debit card connected you're checking account. Is the way to go if you want to make it is easy as possible track where you're spending money. So those -- the six foundations for the digital foundations for career success. Let me know if would you try him out let me know how you you work with seven if -- mimics -- if there are things that I've missed analyst that you think should be on there.
