" You're listening to the skeptics guide to give you give us your escape. -- reality."

" Hello and welcome to the skeptics guide to the universe today is Wednesday October 21. 2000. And this is your host Stephen Novella joining me as always are about develop. Everybody -- developers think guys and Evan Bernstein and heavy apple day every -- apple today -- apple today. Celebrated. -- pleaded with apples -- very American. The American is -- alright -- time I -- yeah. Apple today. Celebration of apples and oranges. Any particular kind of apple loses any kind of apple. Well it and anything having to do with -- can be large -- small Apple's apple games they play in -- juices insiders are made -- let me ask a question. Yes I like them apples. Past and."

" That's good -- You want something a little more scientific always October 23 -- October 23 it is well mole day is October point third. It's celebrated a -- chemists in North America. Between 602 AM and 602 PM. Are now 602. On October 23 to put it all together yet because yes six point attitude it's with the powers are there you go."

" Is there and --"

" To find the number -- articles animal. House so I like them apples there. Are some. So Rebecca is still traveling around the oriental we elect he can report later on in the program. Also I should say have an interview coming up with James Randi. Who conference a couple of his items. Apparently the universe is trying to destroy the Large Hadron Collider from the future -- right. You added this is one of the what were luckier that article was ridiculous it's yeah it's pretty pretty bizarre. But remember in the last year they were talking about the -- seeing how that it was gonna create black colds -- strange matter. And destroy the earth and now we get to scientists that are basically you're saying that we have nothing to worry about because influences from the future. Apparently are gonna are propagated back in time to sabotage. The 08 C profanity the creation of any dangerous particles kind of like -- terminator for -- particles. If I you forget about all this in late ceased affiliate -- Large Hadron Collider as says supercollider. Created by cern."

" And scientists all over the world for the past sixteen years and -- more than nine billion dollars. Is the biggest physics experiment ever built. And when fully operational will hurl. Subatomic particles like protons around and around eighteen mile underground tunnel. And energies of seven trillion electron volts and and they smash in together and they took out -- The debris and hope that it's interstate. And one of the things that they hope is among this debris will be these sad that so called higgs both sign. Also known as -- god particle which is -- hypothesize tune Buell of matter with mass. Now -- LET was supposed to be output up last year remember next year -- was it like August was -- were all like site a Little -- like. They had a problem called a magnetic quench. Which is just the abnormal termination of a magnetic magnet operation. To clinch actually melted the connection between two of their giant on Magnuson. Also explosively released on some liquid helium. And and that was just unfortunately one of the many did delays and problems with TO HC. I'm in fact it's now more than two and a half years late. For when it was supposed to originally be fully operational -- these according to concerned 2005 annual report prediction. But now the station is fully operational. Getting better today. They they hope now is headed will be operational. In about five weeks yourself but you would think that delays like this will be kind of normal right for -- at. And incredibly complex -- instrument and then we look at the delays it look at the delays and problems for the International Space Station. Or any number of science problem web site was delayed that much -- The arrival. But now you got these scientist. Hold her back to Nielsen of the Niels Bohr institute in Copenhagen and must solve. -- media at -- update you cowboy institute for theoretical physics in Kyoto Japan. They're saying that they can mathematically prove. That nature will somehow rippled backwards through time to stop the 08 seed for forty can create the god particle. Doctor Nielsen recently said that it must be our prediction that all higgs producing machines shall have bad luck."

" Locked away -- is that scientific term and in the Niles Borg institute of them I'm I'm. Earlier along yet dead but hey Dave Dave Dave quantified debt but apparently I wanna hear about other scientists reactions -- this -- that this is really then tipping their hand. That they are unscientific. Well. Well yeah you right asked god I've I tried to find some non."

" Some science reaction that I found one and died really helped me kind of figure out what was going on here but be dubbed the other interesting thing that they talk about is that they said that they could test. There hypothesis which is always a great sign -- says that here's a test that's really good. Pretend they're tested is that basically you would shuffle a virtual million card deck of cards in which. All but one saying something like do the experiment and only one out of a million says don't do the experiment. So what they propose is that you randomly pick -- card and they believe that by picking didn't know experiment they're very rare noble experiment card. Could be it actually could be one of the ways that the universe manifests its bias. For no higgs universe I totally don't get any of what you just. And open the way no one more point to other high the hard part though is that you would have to really mean it. The people the scientists at cern would after really mean it when they say that they would do whatever they cards sent. -- one and a million chance that right do not do which is ridiculous of course is is no way that they're gonna test. I'm these wacky ideas and rolled the dice on on something like that it's this crazy that the dead too it's really in contest but do you think are that these guys this is kind of tongue in cheek thought experiment. -- seriously -- so big portfolios at the -- these guys can be being quoted out of context and not be represented fairly. You know in this Fox News report doctor neuroses that doctor Nielsen is quoted as saying. One could almost say that we have a model for god he rather hates -- particles and attempts to avoid right. I mean those kind of statements sounded really cannot take in this that seriously yet you know. The impression I gotta read a bunch of a bunch of news items about and I didn't and it really got the impression that that this is a tendency to -- state. They really believe this fact that's my impression my reaction to this is just initially after just reading it was -- It the data made no sense at that doesn't that he is posts aren't already need to exist for this to be true. So you know it's -- it's kind of bizarre because. If you if you create -- posts on that -- this serious correct and they higgs field permeating the universe gives messed everything. There may be the problem is not. Creating behaves but actually did the discovery itself it just us knowing about -- some bias and universal bias against actually. You know discovering it and that absolutely proving it which you know which is weird it's kind of silly but does that. Then you could start getting into all sorts of weird -- philosophical questions like is there are actual difference with empirical knowing something are just believing in it like what if we lied to a scientists said we I doubt. The headaches and then that person actually believes that we impair clean Noah what's the difference ridiculous and it really is but. If you wanna are more technical objection to try to get. Dig into some of the technical objections at that at least no one scientist has. This is Sean Carroll from discovery's blog called cosmic variance. The one big technical objection makes about a sense is that these scientists. Are using I'm at a person familiar with that imaginary numbers yet. Squared circle route -- minus. Take the square of negative wanted me to really makes no sense but. Clearly it's it works in math and in physics this is it it was and it's a valuable concept. And it if it works at this clearly tremendous value from that this concept but the idea that that they could be an idea -- physical. Manifestation of of of an imaginary number or the -- these scientists they actually use an imaginary component. To submit their theories it's two to the action which is a physics principal. On so they'd take today throwing in an imaginary component and here. Which to me it's a very uncomfortable with actually we do -- doing that. And the scientists themselves is a great quote regarding this whole idea of the scientist himself said the following. Our model with an imaginary part of the action. Begins with a series of not completely convincing but still suggestive assumptions so to clearly. The Genesis of this whole idea is really exit -- speculative."

" Yeah it maybe they're just really speculating wildly war again -- think of this says Mike we talked recently about. The epidemiology. Of gas -- to zombie apocalypse right we start with the kind of -- a wacky fantastical idea but then you proceed. In a very rigorous scientific -- from that point forward -- to its logical conclusion. To say what -- the universe is trying to keep us from finding discovering the -- particle right. Then they go from there it is but starting with crazies sort of but it ends the game right. Pretty much but who knows what does that unless they turn out to be right in which case to be talking like that that's the general of the that's a Nobel prize but. I don't think assert I don't think Sarah's gonna do the the test. So they got to come up with -- another test. It's also proposing. A sort of a solution to a non problem was like why regulates the having some problems because it's freaking corrugated right. We don't need some to propose time travelling these particles of whatever it is to figure out wide the only -- having delays telling delays because it's a complicated -- exactly it has."

" Article reminded me of and that when the Hubble first went up remember it was out of focus in the first pictures can all bugs in them this -- a whole -- severe -- collaboration tried looking it up online and I couldn't find an article I recall reading an article or in the early ninety's when. When this happened. Someone was claiming that. You -- because the Hubble was gonna peer into the you know into the earliest moments of time and so forth and this was somehow God's hand -- that he does not want you to see what creation was like. Back the early time it's we made an argument effectively that you know this is basically. You know god is -- god has made the the -- yeah telescope be out of the out of focus and you know -- past smacked -- in a similar way this story and that won many many years ago."

" Let's go wants a little more down to earth. A recent study published in the journal complementary therapies in medicine. Compared to the effectiveness of copper bracelets. Two different kinds of magnetic bracelets and any -- magnetized control bracelet in -- treatment. Of osteoarthritis. And it's just a different -- I heard different senators that they thought consistent among all people who bought these things was that. Their wallets were were later to about the same degree at different. Doesn't cross over studies -- have -- 45 people where each of the four bracelets for sixty seats and then rate their pain. And there was no difference. In other interest really what I didn't realize that this is actually only the second study looked at copper bracelets for airliners. I did a pub -- search on Don copper bracelets and -- there was just two studies this one and the one from 1976. That's it real everything else whose test. Commentary or or review. The one in 1976 said he showed -- quote some benefit. Britain and nothing dramatic. This one dead negative. Not surprising there really isn't much prior plausibility com to the copper bracelet things for arthritis. There are more studies at the magnetic bracelets and this literature is more noisy but you know what the big problem -- would studying magnetic bracelets and double blind manner. It's easy it's fast with a you have it or not it's really hard to blah yeah right -- He reaching deep reaching your pocketbook for your keys and you'll find out of -- bracelet and Snedeker not. So it -- and that's sort of hampered these these studies as soon as Mori is the weakly positive studies with the magnetic. Stock for the bracelets or or or braces or whatever. -- there was one study found that where it looked at. Magnetic bracelets for knee and hip pain. So it's not even near the part of the body that's supposed speed benefit and that showed a positive effect to me that says. That's a false positive frame it is just no plausibility. Wearing a bracelet is gonna help in need pain. So that's -- shows and I think that the probably blinding in studies and they just measuring placebo effects. But in any case if you put out a side. The if you look at the literature at face value -- there's been a number systematic reviews which essentially showed no effect right at the there's insufficient evidence to say that this is effective for anything. So -- with a more noisy magnetic literature. The evidence is not there. So it gets it defines this this most recent study are not surprising. Interestingly you know I think I've just discussed this before so this quickly summarize a number of mechanisms have been proposed for how. Magnetic in souls of braces -- bracelets and -- and work. And none of them are really panned out and most of don't make any sense to think about -- a little bit. So magnets do not increase blood flow they do not attract the ironing your blog certain non -- magnetic to begin -- doesn't reduce inflammation. It doesn't increase oxygen delivery. It really doesn't have any measurable physiological effect. Wanting that confuses a lot of people is that there are sent some studies looking act. Dynamic magnets right. And each a really powerful. Dynamic Magnus actually have a measurable field at tissue death. Showing some physiological response in the CC to approve its -- principal actually isn't because most these products are static magnets and the static magnetic field. Shouldn't have any physiological effect and and you really can't compare to -- alternating current dynamic magnetic field. And also that the strength of the static magnetic fields that are being used. Is very very shallow little -- to date they drop off very very quickly so it doesn't get to tissue depths you know. Also -- often it's brought up that it's magnetic fields had such a powerful effect on biological function. Then we would probably would notice something -- put people to Tesla magnet for an MRI -- You know. But there really isn't any other than the images that -- drew in a physiological effect. From the from being in that massively power powerful magnets -- forget about the tiny little refrigerator magnets could push traffic to their needs her rest. So bottom line it don't waste your money on copper or magnetic bracelets for pain arthritis or whatever."

" Well you can get to cure rate -- yeah they have an entry model for 5995. You can get or you can get their rose gold deluxe for 200 bucks I can still at the solar stuff I thought they were shut down."

" The FTC's already gone after them in there are -- they've actually had just as many cans. For by the FTC for the Protestant."

" False advertising in north Perry is in the hospital. One time and I went to get himself that the gift shop where went up and dozens and sure enough right there in the displays can display case. Magnetic bracelet good for what goes in order form. Provident up to a we both had a very good laugh over the."

" That's that's created so. I I was -- to spoken or on the Q race -- trying to find some BS on there and apparently they must have taken it all off because of the trouble that they got and so I went today the YQ rail link. And that they're quick response was it says why not for almost twenty years cure has been recognizes the world leader in wellness lifestyle bracelets."

" Wellness lifestyle yes the satellites down -- actual care and this is the way to get around the team regulations. And then give us the quick skinny. On the balloon -- yeah so --"

" Anyone around on Friday when this idea was was and it was anyone yeah aren't getting any paid days and not clear. Either television or radio or what have you in this thing dominated October 16. In which. It's suppose that away homemade balloon. Crafted by any family of Colorado. Got loose from its tether. And apparently inside the balloon was they believed their six year old son falcon. Who somehow got in there and there was this balloon supposedly. Zipping away. With that with a sick with your social ocean -- and exactly. With that with a six year old boy you know inside so you know obviously. Everyone in the immediate concern obviously was for this for the child. And that was the reason why. This -- got the stated -- is fallen down a well exactly exactly as you all know there was the boy was not. Indeed balloon as it came down several hours later in the field and -- that nothing inside it's in the balloon where was the -- Clinton didn't. The bottom has fallen it was off hawks -- something attached to the bottom. In the but the box detachable balloon. Although by the time they have the cameras and everything on it apparently the box or the taxi which happens this you know balloon float away. Those balloons chase ensued for three hours no boy and snowboarders to be found a site where with the boy -- and that the boy was home was hiding in the attic. You know he's -- come according to the father Richard and he he didn't come out because it was afraid that it was you know to get punished -- for playing with a flammable and something. To that effect well what do turned out his little more investigation by police into the matter and this is a hoax. Designed. By Richard and might you meet -- Or no stranger to television they have appeared before on television show called wife swap which is a reality based polls show. This -- Richard -- is big into UFO considers conspiracies big into alien conspiracies."

" Yeah -- is all a publicity stunt to try to you know helped him get their own reality TV show. But I wonder if what happened was that the hoax when a ride you window box detach from the balloon. So then they couldn't pretend that the kid was in there anymore you rate will be -- phone to his death if you were in there. So that kind of blew a hole in their in their store."

" I also read though that he had somebody looked at the balloon it's -- that it never could have lifted the kids wait anyway that's right. Yet here -- most people watching MTV wouldn't know that no but. That's the cameras were following this balloon kind of you know going at a pretty good clip through the air you can tell that things in a speeding by that decent clip. Com it's seemed highly improbable that there was anything. In the apple there was -- bulge there was no you know sign of any of any kind of movement or and there and -- digital rock didn't matter right but there was there was there was no way to. And then they start to tell you about what the approximate dimensions. Of this balloon work and you know people start to figure it out as people I was listening to the radio for the most part as this was developing and they had people calling insane there's no way anything is on the apple it's too small it doesn't have enough you know. It could it could may be lift -- pounder -- may -- yet most. The -- 37. Thank interestingly --"

" You know the press event you know eventually in the internally he investigators. Were we're pretty much on top of it you know really really -- a press for the way the story was reported this Fella Richard had had a video up on YouTube actually had a series of videos up on YouTube."

" Com all about his beliefs about you know aliens UFO's life on Mars. Bunch of -- things that they're all that they've all been taken down now. Come but at one point and there was a link on the Drudge Report to a it was a that the titlist Acre real Hillary Clinton is a reptilian you guys familiar with the whole theory about you know how to -- millions of Indiana and in our alien invaders and they've infiltrated all the highest levels of government around the world and were really all being. Government -- it from the government standpoint controlled by these aliens that are actually control so he's actually effective got a chance the glimpse at that and -- this guy is really not all there."

" Geragos you know I'd I'd never watched that show wife swap and I think it was on 11 timer twice aside and -- the hell was one of the episodes I happen to -- it was disgusting because it the debt. Episode was sold as you could try to get like opposites gas swap wives and see what happens. That was sold like the true believers versus the scientists and this guy. Was this article Mike has this guy's a total ranked. But to these morons he's the scientist. And a procedure watch and watch your wife swap you know -- right now right now -- now. Nobody really gives a very quick update on the lunar plume that NASA didn't see when it crashed the across. Satellite into the into the surface yet far."

" He got some they have some good news for our for the lacrosse mission that hurled if you remember -- an empty rocket stated to the -- the queue for water. If you remember everyone was hoping for dramatic images ever of a plume of two -- debris Horry checked -- racing above the moon rising by of the moon. That plume -- Seem to be a no show. Which is disappointing to many people who who got up early in the morning. To visit the Sidon and look at the big video screen and NASA put up. And I know lots of people will I even know somebody you. Who has a decent sized telescope and he was up looking early trying to see something you need CDs and a lot of people were very disappointed. Even though. I could science in this ended discovery of water was still possible. I just didn't live up to the height. That NASA made of it all season now that the -- satellite that was monitoring the whole thing and taxi plunged into the moon four minutes later. On the after the main impact did in fact detect a plume of -- degree are rising above the surface of the of the moon. But it was very it was very small as you might imagine -- west did ten kilometer high plume that it hoped it was only less than a mile or less than a commoner so. On and the reason I didn't I didn't know this previously as well the reason why they think now that it might have been such a smaller plume was said. Well it's a combination of phase one mistake hollow booster rocket. When the when that was a big hollow it's a thing really hard it it does less damage because it could crumbles. Couples like a car like cut modern cars do narratives so he had his booster rocket to kind of absorb all the impact in. When when it crumpled up and and the actual surface of the moon was they think. That area was kind of spy -- energy absorbing as well so that that's ironic what they're going with now of people from the earth like that the -- Hubble and and people on earth would not have seen this plume at all because it didn't it didn't rise above the rim of the crater that's -- a day could never seen it. So the bottom line is that they finally got the plume which Steve will -- hoping for and they're still doing good science the science is ever really. Terribly impacted by and by any of this. And others saying now that hopefully. End a to have some good information by mid November and hopefully they'll find some of the water."

" a bit of a PR fizzled but the signs though was successful yet exactly. A little more quick items for re check in with Rebecca and Randy. This was an honour of Halloween which is coming up. On next week we really -- Halloween episode went -- to lead up to that researchers have discovered the largest. Orb Weaver spider ever is spider it was in Africa Madagascar. It is called the feel left Cromartie. Palin -- CI. Named after a colleague of these of their discover. Who had -- an accident recently he's gonna pursue discovered it is. Met jazz -- browsers from Slovenia academy of sciences and arts. And see first -- disbursement in 2000 but it was just an isolated specimen and it was dead yeah it was an actual living specimen. But then so subsequently. Found several more are represented -- of the species advocates -- yes this is definitely -- species. The spider is huge. -- forest by. -- for between you know if you saw listing caller on your kitchen I think you would you would notice so how big is it Steve it's not that's actually that the biggest spider it's as the biggest word Weaver spider. So it's body to the body itself -- is about one and a half inches. With a leg easily expand itself four point seven inches and it -- well heads. That are up to meet -- over three feet -- in law allow. Left to see that as an attack in north. Both this really interesting is the the disparity in this size three this female in the mail is also sexual -- yet since the house. Amid its -- is actually -- it seemed evasive female take into isn't now. So there we got biggest -- regions butter to for Halloween and haven't meter wide fake web as decoration and passed to Eric and yeah yeah. It's not a pretty well let's go on and check in with Rebecca and then -- Now we're being joined by a Rebecca Watson from Bangkok Rebecca. How Citic bank cut its."

" Are certain extra -- you guys are hair. -- besides that I it's fun when. Whenever -- can they do live podcast to ask you here in Bangkok. I got a -- what are your job is to set that up to -- having the embankment. At I don't. No one no one contacted me and -- That I should visit them. -- read to you and they don't like me very much early count. Rebecca sicker that you would've already started you know skeptics in the pub Bangkok style or Rwanda and -- Every night where ever I -- its skeptics in the club. If Leo he's euthanized after the clouds Singapore. And Malaysia. And -- thank. Could get so Rebecca I have funny little story to tell you guys okay let me tell."

" literally -- the story of me getting spam from Rebecca is Skype account by some random girl named and in Malaysia. So I. I noticed that Rebecca is on Skype and I said to her like hey you wanna -- like -- last I heard you run a -- Rebecca cited no where and how you're and then. Rebecca quote unquote Rebecca says hi. And -- said how are you where are you there she goes Malaysia some like cool how is it. And then. Up moments -- the conversation clearly was not meet with Rebecca. -- it was a Rebecca on the other I didn't like it was not Rebecca. Make it. And that it wasn't so I thought I figured okay somebody hacked into were count. So I start seeing weird stuff so I said to the person I think of going to shoot myself printing you Skype me. And if -- the lady responds with nice where are you. For the fifth."

" So I that I send out Rebecca these crazy he doesn't like regret their emergency emergency somebody hacked in your Skype account I caller offered everything so -- the get email from Rebecca and she says no doubt that Horry. That was me I I was drunk I was in a cyber cafe and I accidentally that Skype. And I left. Think."

" thought it was so mastermind. Malaysian hacker is just as random people were going -- Skype account and yes. I change the path. If -- and that's the thing. Becky you imply that you have had some encounters with the paranormal. In the Asia its share of week. We spend a few days aren't as beautiful island called mentality. Which is right up the coast of Malaysia. And Adam our on our way there we we met this really cool woman on a train and team. She's talking to us about the island and what wish he -- earlier there and she told us the story."

" This and this woman."

" Who. Does was put to death on the island is -- like entries up. The woman apparently you became pregnant out of wedlock and she was accused of adultery. I Olympic flame to that she had become pregnant by some supernatural. Mean how. But they didn't believer and and they put it to death for adultery."

" But when Maine -- that they were stabbing her with steers ads on my. And she'd led to white which apparently showed that she was innocent. The athletes who they say she she died and -- the island. To have. Seven centuries. Terrible. Luck apparently."

" But the seven entries are so it's actually quite a -- little tourist. Island now who. You can -- you can go to C news feed this woman's grave and you can also. Speed. There's a late."

" Called the -- of the pregnant needed. And it supposedly that's where she got magically pregnant. And women who want to get pregnant are encouraged to go there and swim. I did not swim in the late."

" So hopefully I will not get the magic pregnant. All right so Dave said that if she's innocent she bleeds wait. And she got him accurately. Can -- conceived. Well impregnated them out -- and there's there's a line of thought going on here I dummies they killed god. Yeah that's true push it lot of Vanilla Ice cream before they got -- It looks like it. It's it's an inch I -- I thought was really interesting story. -- think. Anyone that the magical mpeg nation. But it. Deeper story I think it that -- these preliminary death Bert Bert having. Children out of wedlock. So -- who wouldn't say that it will let us right of course -- well -- out. It's so unique kind of can't flavor of the whole beating -- thing who knows where where that -- came from it's almost kind of nice at issue became our heroic. Figured I considered."

" That there was a very anti. Woman her. Law that that -- yeah."

" A big issue wasn't lying I mean you know she could have been saying you know it was magical like maybe you should really enjoyed it you know."

" Well we'll vote gap. And not to bring down too much Austin might have been raped so. -- that is yeah oh yeah put those it was 700 years ago if it yeah. Yeah it's I didn't do the forensics on that -- afterwards. But then also we went to Latin and he'll waterfall."

" On the island that's really pretty lot of well that's updating our brain -- and."

" A greet her kite. Theories has been an -- to use that as there."

" Playground."

" So we went we we looked. But only so we're. Dozens of adorable little local children so the media says experience they weren't very cute and keep -- I don't know about and in -- Rebecca would come home I will be back in London I ain't. Next Thursday against end of October but said that when he ninth. Some -- and that's your thinking beyond the show next week I might not be how many times you definitely captured them after that yet."

" You'll be home in time for Halloween now. I will be back in time for Halloween. How we -- is asking -- London. -- Shaq has -- that would be a deal breaker I wouldn't go out. Yes speaking at a British series UT guys like Adam cred to are unaware of its existence. -- yes I'm aware of is is it and never got into. Well I changed. -- the actor and it's and read to our staff has a magazine's Robert Miller has. He's he's on TV in England. -- shows and yes and Internet show called."

" where he drives -- out with people and and talks to them basically. And I I guess I'm going to be on it orally in November so. I'll let you guys -- and it's up it'll it'll guidelines so everybody can see so that's and I allow."

" But those are skeptics -- a plug of course both Rebecca we will look forward to getting you back from your -- to spread skepticism throughout Asia."

" Yeah look I look forward to seeing her on the such as. As much sense and have been intervening. Months -- enjoy the rest you took Rebecca thank you and attacking again. And I eight."

" Joining us these claims Randy Randy welcome back to step disguised. It's good to be here through. And James radius of one of the few people in the skeptical movement that truly requires no introduction I think everyone knows quite well who you are but. Will will give that a quick overview. I James -- of course is a magician and skeptic and promoter of science and reason. I -- is the chairman of the board of the team entering the educational foundation. The author of numerous books and an inveterate skeptic. The founder of of course the terrorists and the amazing meeting which is involved into the annual meeting of the skeptical movement in my opinion. And it's always a pleasure to have you on our shows again welcome back."

" I'm blushing here you can't see it but I. -- you can email you can see. It as he had never daily news implausible. Idea I want proof that's well. America."

" Surrender it the other I think the question that everyone has first off is how are you doing health wise."

" Well -- Give you an immediate report that on the -- report I'm sitting here with a bottle in my pocket under pressure which is -- Of chemotherapy -- little port on my chest is brought upon and I I feel like the bionic man validity 600 dollar per day. But I imagine doing very well what I am I -- ahead taking chemotherapy at. I have just had my seven to -- of twelve that are scheduled and obviously he's the first week of -- January -- and I'm doing very well IE I have no complaints and all on tape in the right medications and I think Arizona in bringing lots of fluids no longer a girdle. They days and -- and guys that might accompany this is just absent I don't know what Eric is my pure solar wanted to is that. Whatever it is -- maybe I'm just so nasty that the poisonous. They're afraid to offend me am -- here."

" Facial courtesy this is and I thought -- at a very good. Well that's great the prognosis I understand is it."

" prognosis is good and -- I had the operation Noah. Was colon cancer inmate to go to infusion Michael on but I've -- centrist way I always have because there's ye judge in your argument and parents are against her. And share but -- they removed than a minute you release he murdered clear of lymph glands and a few things like that I decided to cancel my own implants all together to. An article about it that's. So you're failing yourself of the best of science based met this absolutely and then no beating on and drums -- prayers or chatting are homeopathic medicine no I. I've managed to escape that night I decided the last minute no I'll Goldie the old fashioned way its code science right. -- a Mac no magnets are copper Perino I don't know -- break maintenance."

" Can I ask you has anyone any anyone from the other side to try to talk to you -- offer you any alternative medicine unscientific. Treatments. Or they don't really don't matter. And so far they haven't but some Iran I understand is now claiming that she predicts this. Is that right. Yes -- no it's not right that she did better than the -- Clancy but we don't have that in any writing or anything document no alright somebody go."

" That's after hearing this close and send me a raft of things version says exactly that."

" Hi -- at some point said Randy will get sick at some point in the future there's. Which has seen the odds yes it's pretty safe there -- gonna let anybody here."

" I thought a funny thing happens you know I'm a share this with you in -- and Jim Mosley is and ex friend of mine who lives in -- in authority here and you publish this thing called saucer smear. Speeches don't want UFO as a new -- to a government. But they say. Hand tied things emails -- every now and then. In discovered computers. He fell out of me somehow I don't know what it was all about right I can't recall now but. Somehow he was saying -- is denying the existence of UFOs degenerate I'm not a dissident I mean evidence. A UFO. Very careful about the statements but says he eventually change his mind in Germany. Decided that it was all a crock. And he used another expression actually and that says he just sort of went along with it because it was sort of fun to follow the -- who's been there. Google hasn't been dying at an alarming rate. And news that I guess we're the only two that are left and mature."

" And yet I was kind of the impression I got from his book that he was being kind decoy a not really saying if he believes or doesn't believe but it was all kind of fine. So I guess it. Subsequently he's he's been more emphatically saying yeah there is no evidence for UFO's it is easy taking that position now. " Can you give us at any anecdotes from the book it was a taste what it's gonna be about. As I'm gonna wanna lose it very two chapters one of the very big ruse is going to be on the -- east affair which is -- operative course. Does -- he's the only person job -- friends who supported the whole home we out of the picture and he -- Is he on the ground in history to win 28 Nobel prize yes. And that's that's as a distinction you you can't quite an honor it got -- to get that. But there is now deceased and also dead. And for me and and an accident during nerve and brain operations and under guard -- was tapped into. By turning -- I had there was never and amazement. He wrote we have very badly archivist -- there -- accused me of all kinds of dreadful brings. That is there. In the in the yeah academic your action by the high. " I wish that on me apathy died with -- and -- but it hasn't between now owned unit that it's it that's one of the ones it amazes me that it still is trucked away and now. I'm not an excuse. They've been following some of blogs have been talking about it on the fact that the Huffington Post has now hired to deep Dino Coleman. As a regular blogger and he is an apologist for me up with -- so there's eroded her -- some of."

" Is an embarrassing human being -- on -- yeah at the I don't have gone we have now he's he's just that. Isn't the point that you used to mean I think I have to give the benefit of the doubt and -- stupid. I don't think he's a nefarious person I'm glad that you eat his whole profession is based on me doubly so we have to just and that. And that gives him -- good motive sued to promoter of course but I think she's just basically -- juvenile."

" Yeah I mean you know I think in in the way that creation is say are in that they have looked up there and an impossible position they they have to defend something which is wrong. Yeah and it's amazing the mental gymnastics. Dana -- goes through. Cherry picking data and I was making ridiculous correlations between things it it really is just astounding."

" And they they're trying to is that he can ignore all the negatives up by choosing -- juicy cherry picking of course. But to him I think he thinks it's okay yet because -- because basically the phenomenon is phenomenon is very you say that's his belief. I think he really honestly believes that it works and then he insists as a as a a chemical phenomena under and are you could describe and really."

" Yet they yet they he's pushing the water memory thing now and some people link to it evidence that has absolutely nothing to do with home out of the end doesn't supported agencies seek. There's something funny going on with water that means coming up that he can work. That sounds like runs and Breuer a guy that's. You can Roy he's he's has been promoting this water memory thing which is is really absurd -- it to. They're now they're put to the very transient effects. And and which does not in any way to rescue -- apathy from being here. Vital to stick magic."

" Well you know I'm Swiss and you run something that's going to be a commander in new book a magician in the laboratory I give Europe a good sample is something -- And I have been fighting the NIH now. To send -- because I'm wrong Judy you in this group you know do this group has although. You'll displaced or I should say it says and that's -- radner and yes sir -- sizable portion. And IA as just down the street from me here -- not more than 200 yards. And so I walked on and it has spent a lot of my time there in the evening. Just sitting holding people's hands and Manchurian Americans are feeling very sorry for themselves and rightly so. There are right -- against. One of the things I'm writing about. Yeah in minute magician and an average -- There's the fact that acupuncture is being promoted. Tacitly promoted I had that very carefully placed. By the NIH the National Institutes of Health. Now that's is a 120 billion dollars for years a -- it's -- this is just incredible. And it's paid for by taxpayers and and also some generous donors or their -- Now. They have 520. References to experiments. To examine whether acupuncture works. On their web page and the united twit page you can go to a -- 520. Of them. I have a fellow in England. Who has gone through the first 200 for yourself. So far doing an analysis of them as to whether or not they're valid. Blooded murder in Chinese so we can't read them but also yes parent councils house but we've got certain classifications. Eight of them H out of the ones and he's examined are ready as I say somebody 24200. -- whenever it is. Eight of them are positive but. None called the age where -- gunman double blind. And -- most of they mentioned that was not necessary and when you you're testing acupuncture to do the don't the most almost surely no experimenting is valid. A message double blind in if it if it's a double -- Actually just not valid and some of the eighth of the winners and most of them. Are incomplete they don't then they just have the abstract they don't have the entire paper and the entire paper runs on for -- never over the -- And you can imagine when you when and if you're gonna find it so so far. They're not doing too well in the stuff they've opera nine a with the NRA is -- I'm sure. They just -- just I'm still they -- going into Google and Yahoo! and pick up everything you can on experiments have been done to examine the efficacy. That acupuncture. And they've done that they just listen to them as if they were positive and you go eliminates negative negative negative or. The usual thing they only had forty -- pictures and you can't get a database on forty subjects have something like this."

" Yeah absolutely -- and this is I think because the NH. Has now the national center for complementary alternative medicine as well as wanted to centers which was sort of forced down their throats by. The Senate via the cartoon was mainly behind that. And -- of others basically it needs a foothold of complementary alternative medicine proponents are using. The prestige of the and I each. To promote treatments which don't work. Like -- acupuncture and in their and their use in this era and in my opinion very deceptive mechanisms try to make it seem as if it's legitimate but. As you saving your your -- but your colleague is doing is replicating. What has already been done with specific questions there had been systematic reviews of acupuncture evidence for specific indications. And at the wrong negative when every tape all right what's all the evidence -- departure of back pain you look at all the evidence. You look at the quality of the studies which will deposit of which went -- negative they're decadent. There's billions over all the evidence is the right if you're for or if there weren't a political. Agenda agenda behind -- it -- if this were just some reported so. Another and it's our regular medical modality it would have been discarded a long time ago when you."

" You'll get a big kick out of this I did -- great -- and you out yeah HS yeah. -- what is your view on the user back to Russia for treatment of cancer and for the side effects of chemotherapy that I am currently undergoing. Because even the local ads -- do you think you're trying to bunch of Bible are revealed that complete lecture and believe me in M hydrogen. And then again I don't that's much different from Marleau that John. Or."

" Expect that did you say do you know who I am a if you look at me."

" Examination of those 500 pretty papers is proving very very interesting because I got my first chance. By examining all the NI HI pamphlets that I could find. And -- race has lots of Iran and Iraq as dramatic as you can imagine the usual mention is something like you may wish to speak to your physician. Concerning the use of acupuncture for -- for these side effects and now that he's saying nothing is a tacit approval -- kiss F that he is an approval. Because people read these leaflets in the CN IH approves it at all all of the acupuncture is a winner for an MRI the other day. -- he'd come at a problem at the -- America and Iran -- neurological or whatever and a nice celebration is littered with acupuncture brochures. The guy who runs the machine. This is a technician. Is also a doctor a two punctured. And I advertises wears on there and he publishes in those leaflets. 59 diseases that acupuncture is used to treat and so he says. And he uses -- mention of the top. Approved by the NIH. I sent them copies of these things and saying is this claim correct or not. They war especially the the answer I did get when I sent an email and to the NIH. -- with the it I I sat here and I roared with laughter and rural what was wrong with the old guy and the officer. Is said. That -- have examined the needles. That are used it to acupuncture treatment and they are sharp. And stainless steel and they can be sterilized and they are discarded -- Now that's exactly like saying. To a to a guy uses ghost and NASA says. I wanna go up on the shuttle and repair the toilet they've been having problems with or -- of course -- look I have pistols and ranch. Our. -- and Richard the best -- a doozy so Nash and ash flat idols. If they use sharp needles for the NIH isn't it you sharp needles that's the proof."

" Well -- plowed yeah I run into that a lot he has asked the FDA approves. The needles. As being acceptable Barack medical devices. That's not the same thing as approving the use of any of those needles that's right that's right are and -- the -- possible effect on them. It says nothing and -- thanks well yes -- people to advertise FDA approved but they're really just talking about -- of some very narrow sense it has nothing to do with the actual clinical claims that are being made."

" Thank you Shia and electrical devices and hardware show URL or whatever it is approved at underwriters laboratory approved. It's approved for use but it doesn't mean that it does what he does. Is just -- safe. You can use this thing."

" Yeah so -- and I don't know yet. Yes but you could see how savvy they've become in finally every possible way of trying to surround themselves with the trappings of legitimacy without ever having actually earned it through evidence."

" It's very true I'm Suzanne Somers aggression made an announcement just edited and I was in the midst of these and the -- wire. An infusion. I think. I turned on the television and she was there on. Oprah Winfrey -- an ethical as a joke yeah yeah. If she was saying that chemotherapy has been proven to be total nonsense so I yanked a needle out of my Democrat gazette if you don't like kind of an authority she is. She's an actress. -- The medical training of profound."

" Oh Suzanne Somers -- me started on her so she recently. Said that you know Patrick Swayze interviewed -- he has regularly there she said he died because of the chemotherapy that's right. Does he admitted to apologize for -- Oprah just farms over her like crazy. Oprah is one of the most dangerous women in history -- is -- you Diaz a great idea for quite some time now. Absolutely absolutely concedes she creek gives them a platform. For every crank in Charlotte and that's out she's -- perhaps this is the loudspeaker she's the amplifier. No doubt you take something that's terrible and makes it a hundred times worse it makes it apparently central to a lot of the laser is sitting there American chairs and watch and they'll go by the book yes he's basically our nemesis that I think it went for it. So -- like asking. Those people who have been in the skeptical movement longer than I have. How are you saying we are doing. On the value of our perspective it that obviously and is more far reaching -- are so how how do you secret don't I think we're doing okay either."

" I the feedback I get is a very satisfaction I get they -- the -- who admit to woo stuff I'm promoting my word -- I wanna get that in the winter's gonna be using enough exposure is going to be in my new book I'm almost every page I'm sure. And we know I think we're doing well can I get a lot of mail from people who are congratulating -- and what I'm doing and that. And letters that read like. I just kind of thing you know when I first heard you mr. Randy I was very -- here then I -- one year books in the library or about the book which is my torso essentially. And them. I found that you were right. I had a lawyer friend I don't ever saw this earlier this fellow walked in the door at unannounced with a briefcase and is and is on his way. Who had to hear a case a couple of bucks on the current posts I -- he happened by. And day -- and read greeted him and he want to have a word with me and he will be -- refused to go to tattered reached tattered copy I was on my love to see those artifacts. And it had yellow slip -- I don't know all three openings on the book. He said this is my. My -- my copy of them slam much eye -- saudis have been -- something if you will be headed to be nice -- that it was only two thirds of the way. Love yellow slips. He said yes I stopped two thirds of the way through because I was wasting yellow slips on and looks in the mirror and should have the man's right -- And since I. I am happy anywhere Reese joined -- my favorite -- ideas on that sort of thing. And buddies and I got to that point and I gave up and he said that I'm -- by senator copier -- that -- but he also true. You make a difference if it turns people around in their tracks and makes them think I don't lessen the believe what I saying I always say don't believe me saying -- You know examine what I'm saying and find out for yourself what do you consider to be more reasonable than the previous attitude. And he apparently did that and he was very happy with the results the money and I sit -- like. I mean my chance street hello Terry I was there was something to -- I was unbearable for two days."

" new book by the way I did a quick search and to woo woo is in the urban dictionary. Who knew the people who likes blue white and blue -- really descriptive evidence that to a person espousing UH theories such as -- were crystal metric right key. Senator senator. Or gullible person is the second definition however it's not in that Webster's online picture dictionary you may -- urban dictionary but not -- went -- there. Well I mainly from works and I am right now. Neitzel but directly to. He came back to regular sync and really I agreement think we we get those emails as well I think that and we certainly. Can have an impact on the individual. -- But what do you think. How do you think we're doing into the broader culture the perception of skeptics within culture our penetration. Are effect on the media. If do you feel that he feels different that it was -- twenty years ago."

" I don't think readily suspension on the media and -- the media is not interested in truth there interest in the abstract. And it's something comes out where clear path is the same some young girl's life. They'll publish that. And they criticisms of the call referred for our comment on the thing and I know damn well they're gonna change it or they're not gonna use that at all."

" I agree -- county that to you of the the media outlets that write the story first and then -- the investigation just a silly -- got the needed details but they've already and they -- you know what the story is that they're not actually during an investigation."

" And you know what happens and it does say something like -- we need death and opposing view -- here -- because it is gonna be fair. That's not fair tell me heard -- use that are they changes so -- token it just opens deficit in being."

" But at the same time I'd like to adjust to -- in WIRED Magazine which is actually pretty well circulated online magazine. They just it ran a cover story on autism and vaccines that was hard nosed skeptical and really was a great article excellent. It was great SOA and I you know I think that's what we're penetrating you know each other and there you know we're getting -- we -- getting there. And besides in the personal mail that I get such a meet people in this."

" Usually people in restaurants and then in in -- when iShares on drugs from here for the airport and on planes all the time. And I wanted to recognize and be able using them over and say something could I don't know with the people who who who's been snarled at me they've asked why don't it's not very well. -- so maybe just as many people pass -- you hate my guts but yet we're getting we're we're making an impression. And if we keep the one with the latest amazing meetings that we've had in London. And this can Las Vegas for a 1007 people in Las Vegas and I'm very buoyed by that too I must say."

" Well Randy it's always a pleasure to talk with you -- glad to hear that you're doing so well. Well I'm I'm happy to hear from mussina always happy to hear from your personal and artists to US I occasionally do it's our paths do cross and skeptical world. And banish her own. All of your listeners that I am doing very well with the chemo and is not bothering me -- well make me extremely weak I do a lot of mapping. But at 81 and I do a lot of -- that -- But clearly -- were all amazed at."

" How that act difference Friday or even through all of this so you're an inspiration. And that's where they called. Man you didn't well thanks to get ready it was a pleasure of serenity thank you Barbara. It's time to shine. --"

" Each week I hope it's besides these items are facts to genuine and one fictitious. -- Allen's mind skeptics determine which ones. Is the -- Are you all ready for this week guests read -- bush Diamond -- is a bye week for America. Here we go a little one. New research finds that diabetes is a major risk factor for developing schizophrenia which may result from the effects of insulin on the bring. And number two researchers found that testosterone levels of men who voted for John McCain or Robert -- In the 2009 presidential election dropped significantly after hearing the results of the election. I have a three geologists have identified it alternate -- attic krater for the KT extinction event off the coast of India. And if confirmed would have resulted from a meteor four times as large as the one that caused the Yucatan creator. Having affairs."

" A major risk factor for developing schizophrenia. That diabetes. Resulting from the effects of insulin on the brain. -- wrong. Major prospective. I thought the major risk factor develop -- it was -- Genes you are past the long I don't know about talent. And then researchers found testosterone levels of men who voted for McCain and far. Drops significantly. After results. I guess so I mean there's nothing implausible about that instead of since people volunteered for that specific study and casting. Study in away and incidentally for those who who don't recall John McCain are boring lost that now -- they. The commander recount but -- wouldn't they also have you know to keep the man who voted for Obama. On -- and here's its interest and I think -- news science and now this one. And alternate candidate -- for the KTX. Off the coast of India. Shore yeah why not mean because we you can identify. A candidate. You know maybe it was four time it would have been portends or does that mean it was it. You know it's not confirm it like it sets that balance seems possible to make I don't know about this major risk factor that you're describing about insulin on the brain. For its developing schizophrenia that one doesn't sit right with me so I'll say that -- inspection OK but."

" CA another. Or alternate candidate KT well I was pretty Tuesday that they would find another. Potential crater that could have caused he would dinosaur extinction sixty -- use of four times as large that would be. A huge huge meteor over twenty miles where our. I thought well what an event that would be two. The testosterone dropping deferred. Supporters of McCain. Back I can kind of see that it you -- really -- by supplement that I he I would have an effect on testosterone but significantly trapped. And now. And then the diabetes one. Major risk factor for. I would've thought that would have been. Discovered -- quite awhile ago if that was the that was the case. That's something that would just to seems odd that they would would only notice that now on insulin on the brains and we're now at December it to me. I'm gonna say that one is fiction okay today."

" Steve you know with a diameter of the Yucatan crater is not have try to figure out -- get this thing in India. Was four times the size and I actually think that that would -- Two big. That's something that that size would have. Would have actually done a lot more damage. Would have done too much damage you know it's something you know big enough hits the -- picket -- the could crack the actual mental. And that's that's a and outsiders don't know enough about how big this. With this proposed. It was. -- I don't know about that one. -- researchers found the testosterone levels dropped after. People found out that John McCain Robert Bartley lost that's that's pretty interesting to me guess I guess that's plausible I mean I don't know what. -- it's interesting to think that your emotion can affect your testosterone level. Dramatically or quickly. But -- I suppose that's plausible. The new new research finds that diabetes. Could be linked to schizophrenia. That's another one of those things I'm sure it's plausible. So when you're diabetic you you don't process. Insulin properly rate."

" Are resistant to insulin type two diabetes yet so that would mean that you have to watch insolent. Yeah he had type one type one diabetes -- you don't make insulin. There's something is wiped out the cells pancreas that many things when type two diabetes you make too much insulin injuries assistant to the -- and of the incident have as much of an effect it's supposed to."

" Okay so this is going under type two diabetes yes yes that bright led to too much insulin could have an effect on your brain. That's really interesting that you. And I think that what is that science. It don't know about the did that testosterone one that's out. It's -- it's possible to stone I don't know enough about it but it just. So -- about Allen seems kind of strange to me -- I just don't think that this this whole thing with the KT extinction. Something four times as barges that you could tank crater I think that one is a fake okay."

" Almost -- middle then you'll agree. That the researchers found that its -- levels of men who voted for John McCain Robert -- 2009 president collection dropped significantly after hearing results the election. And that one. It is science. Not surprising they did compared to those who voted for Obama whose levels. -- only a little bit. Mainly because it was in the evening and you know levels tend to fall later today anyways so. The levels for the Obama voters felt just slightly to protect it from the time that day. But the -- McCain and bars supporters dropped significantly by 25% so what. Why does that happen -- the thinking is it that's it you testosterone obviously is a hormone of aggression in men bizarre actually there's only emails. And that's tied to contests so -- these similar findings have been found him for our. You know men after losing it losing a competition. Or if we lose. -- competition. Through a proxy -- of your team loses in you have the same kind of -- reduction in the intense stock and so. This extrapolate -- into something but team kind of a contest even in pop into politics like who you support for president."

" I find this curious because it it makes me think that you know maybe we evolved this. To come and eat me some more subservient. When we'd been best hitter went beaten down exactly. That's that is the standard interpretation that. Its dominance competition kind of thing when you lose it had a -- to a two more subservient. Moved. It's easy to see what the advantage would be that if you've been bested in the competition that Europe still popped up on testosterone. You used and may provoke the enemy that is clearly destitute so. It's probably missed a survival advantage to come down at that point to shift more into his conservative way of behaving. But it's essentially -- this extrapolate -- into political effects. And let's go onto the third one geologists have identified an alternate entity created for the KT extinction event off the coast of India. And if confirmed it would have resulted from a meteor four times as large as the one -- cause you know content creator do you think this -- a fiction about an avenue to this when it signs. And this one. Is science. Night today science. -- that's that's a muscle surprising you know this is their. Claiming is pretty darn big crater this is the Sheba -- its outer rim forms a rough faulted. Wring some 500 kilometers in diameter. Area estimate that it does is it confirmed as he. Media creator. That the the bowl wide. That struck would have been about forty kilometers or 25 miles in diameter. Compared to the content strike which was. Eight -- eight to ten kilometers of five to six point two miles wide. So -- this would be. Four cars there and they dated to approximately the same time. You know they still need to. In -- confirmed that the date they think that it would date to -- Two to KT directory. But they team of researchers. Need to do on some on site investigation and confirm that there's shocked quartz in the basin. That there's an iridium anomaly that it has the features in other words. Of of an actual meteor strike and not something else that's -- super volcano or something. They said this would have cracked the crossed. But it would've had its own tech tonics basically. I would have resulted in the you know secondary. Volcanic eruptions. This this was a cataclysmic event so whenever it -- visit strike whenever it happens whenever. Constant sadness wasn't wouldn't it be to bake. Mitt will say immunity to upset has to be more thoroughly analyze. It wouldn't necessarily be viewed de facto too big an impact. It would have been in cataclysmic Ian McCarthy that would cause a mass extinction. But not necessarily. Like why are all life on earth kind of so what I find it mean if this is it is really is an impact crater left by lifting is that you do what about the -- 101 you know. If you abuses he -- the data is what these what if the states to indicate teaches that the -- and strengthening. What does that mean and one of them is wrong that there were two strikes. Does that mean unit broke apart in two places and ways and -- Or was it part of some sort of asteroid storm -- to Davie imagine 22. Hitting within you know. Within centuries of each other or even close -- if you recall there's been you know -- analyzed. The out of fossil strata from around the world. And every right does seem to zero like the bullseye on the -- strike so I don't be jealous little -- and attack. I think it's either not a meteor strike or -- to some other time to be very surprised if the yeah yeah Alcatel and strike data it turns out not to be true is that seems pretty solid. Yeah -- my my guess is it's going to be another under the was kind of."

" It's much easier I think to make a mistake and the timing at this stage of the game than the actual shape of it is -- and it should -- it looks integrator for it so we'll save. All of this means that. New research finds that diabetes -- respect for developing schizophrenia which may result from the effects have been slow on the brain is complete fiction. Stuff they do it -- it is nothing units -- that from their memory. However I did get this from real luck he's Qaeda -- state linking risk for the development of schizophrenia. To the treatment with -- and anti epileptic trucks. This is an animal studies. Looking at the effect of certain anti of slipping drugs aren't critical. Given you during critical periods of brain development on an animal model. That increases schizophrenia like behaviors so. You know mental illness is always hard to model and an animal that is -- have the eaters are humans to. So this is beautiful you know schizophrenia like the neighbors and an animal and it's something but it it's it's hard to know what that really means.
