" Welcome back. Very few companies reached the point where their name it actually becomes a verb. But Google has now joined those ranks as -- I'm -- Google -- and tennis and find out just how good he really yeah my grandson aim at a good idea -- but Google is much more than a search engine and joining -- to attack about the latest products in the company's work in the region is you've been here he's engineering -- director of -- and -- Computer science graduate thank you very much for joining us pleasure to welcome here very. I don't just ask you how are things working out and Kendall Square and what's -- operation."

" And Google it's a really exciting time in Kendall Square there's a lot of companies that are working together to. To really make it a really vibrant place to work and we've been very fortunate to have space across from MIT. And this -- it kind of combines a lot of the nice things about New England one is the mass transit system that he is we -- right above the key so people can get to make live locally. Obviously what's phenomenal about this area is the -- is my talent. The both on the business side and the engineering side there's just so many people. On the we've been able to grow very quickly we're over 200 people now and I've been -- over to have -- so. The very short period of time we've been able to really pulled together very large thing."

" Now we're looking a -- at the very cool -- there in the paint on tables and things like that without I guess engaging in corporate espionage. A little to -- there you know particular. Seriously -- focusing on a Kendall Square sort of specific. Types of programs -- is it really you know across the whole -- activities."

" Yeah that's one of the things I really get heavily involved in what's really exciting for me and I think for a lot of people who work there is. We've got involved in a broad range of things so we've done everything from. Core infrastructure things like when you when you do a search on Google it actually goes to servers that we are involved in developing. And to user facing things like. Image search. As we search for images who we actually choosing the media user interface for that. Two books search which is very common scanned the world's books is is you know really really hot thing in the news right now where it's also something people feel really passionate about. Into. Social. Services we we have something called Google friend connect we've developed actually here locally. It's trying to make the entire web more social. By allowing web masters to make each of their sites more social state."

" I've actually been here offices and after winning a couple of ping pong games I got bit by somebody but the interesting thing to me is the culture. And that Google is trying to establishing. Some folks have talked about. The difference in culture between the east coast. And the west coast can you talk a bit about that and what it means in terms of collaboration. Sure."

" So one of the things that people knows when they walk right in is that seems like a really fun place. And a lot -- times you get you you get caught the people playing all day long NC has not quite -- the case in fact what we do interviews. We interview very carefully for people's ability to collaborate that is a huge huge thing that we that we care about. And we and we want to the interview turned itself to be a collaborative more. You know I think when I hate when I came here and and I was asked to to kind of grow this office one thing that was asked who has. Understand that Google culture. Very deeply. But also make it your own. So every officer of Google feels that could Google office regardless of whether it's in Missouri courts in Cambridge -- in Mountain View but the same time every office. Has some of the culture from the local area and and trying to understand what that balances declined the best of both is exactly what we thought and care about because that's what makes people feel like their place they wanna come to every day."

" Can't you just taking the collaboration thing one more step. I'm told that on the west coast. Companies actually worked together it as both collaborators. And competitors do you see that here or your neighbor of Microsoft. Are you just rating their talent and they're -- your account."

" That's a great question so I went with Deval Patrick to. Tour a number of different companies in. In the Bay Area. And participated in a round table to talk about kind of what people saw was the difference between the that the two sides the two parts of the country. And one of the big issues with mentoring. -- entrepreneurial. The new entrepreneurs young entrepreneurs are coming up and how. That's really a prominent responsibility of senior people. On in in the industry in the west coast. We took that to heart there's a whole lot of entrepreneurial activities going on. In New England and specifically the Boston area which are really trying to hold together that. The community here. And emulate some of those best qualities that we see in the west coast so just specifically about Microsoft. Terrorist bombing is the head of Microsoft Office I am on. Kendall Square association with her we're try I didn't see a ping pong table now because I know I don't I think they do now I figured out. But. You know so we both believe deeply that the success of both of our are groups in this area is contingent on making this area. Provide as many opportunities as possible for for the count that this place produces. And so the problem is not that there are -- people were fighting over -- the problem is we're trying to keep more people. Stay here by offering them more opportunities to them more opportunities there are in in -- softer industry to better it is for everybody."

" bit late in the week we -- Federal Communications Commission move ahead with this policy known as net neutrality. We should disclose Comcast owns NEC and Comcast has a strong view about what net neutrality means and you know organist for Comcast cable that. Manage bandwidth hogs among other things that led effort you'd be able bit describe how Google sees the issue of net neutrality what you hope the FCC will do around us."

" Yes I I don't wanna specifically this described the policy that that Google supporting -- say very generally high level. Net neutrality is critically important in the same way that Google supports. Open systems. The idea is to create a player. A -- playing field for companies to compete is critical to innovation. And so Google is behind any activity which encourages innovation and encourages more openness and fairness in the market and that could neutrality is one of the this phenomenally wonderful things that's going on right now."

" I'm gonna guess that had forced you to name names -- are -- places refueling you know telecommunications providers are. Kind of crap what Google's able to deliver what yeah I I I don't make any comments on that I know. Since there's already jumped around let me jump to another area I've noticed that he had campaigns that Google is putting together. Growing global mean what is the Genesis of that and your advertising obviously on your search engine that's what draws folks -- but what what. What is the advertising theory did -- your knowledge of Google right now. Well I think. What Google should schools try."

" Our focus is to enable other people to advertise right if you notice that you who has not put a lot of effort and advertising. Except around very specific things like android which again is trying to open the mobile industry to more competitiveness. You know I I think what's really exciting to me is when I think of why we're in this location here and in Boston the Cambridge area. One thing is the incredible -- of engineers and business people that are coming out of schools another's ecosystems of companies that are in this area that create opportunities. A third is that we have a huge number of partners in this area and agencies for example we have a huge number of customers to. And and and we work with -- non profits actually to provide some -- Google grants which encourages people to. Advertise for free for for non -- so there's a whole range of relationships that we have in this area. And and what's really wonderful is. It's all of those qualities together just make it a great opportunity for who and a great opportunity for the for the for the for the area -- they wanna mention is that. Who has to be called Google. Apps for businesses. And it's exploding right now so for example there's over two million businesses today that are using Google apps. And they allow you to do in note in the in the cloud what you can traditionally been able to do on your desktop in the big differences. You can collaborate much more easily and collaboration and discussed earlier what's really happening we've already seen explosions communication by having access the network. And -- having the Blogosphere explode by having email me you know so successful. And instant messaging now we're seeing is collaboration in the workplace."

" And the spherical aberration in the workplace we gonna get onto the next OK Steve mister thank you very much. About whatever you're gonna Google Steve thanks for joining pleasure and up."
