In the middle of a perfect beach day, high school students from throughout the Boston area are in a laboratory, engrossed in lessons about DNA. Their teacher is Tracy Callahan, a scientist with Biogen Idec, in charge of what the company calls its community lab.

We speak with Michael Krondl about his book, "The Taste of Conquest The Rise and Fall of the Three Great Cities of Spice". With 25 million toys recalled this year due to lead contamination and other safety hazards, holiday shoppers are wondering how they can make sure the toys they give this year are safe.
