David Carroll - Two Palestines: Risk of a West Bank First Policy

The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library presents a discussion on the collapse of the Palestinian National Unity Government (NUG), following the takeover of Gaza by Hamas, which left the Palestinian territories in crisis. The United States and larger international community are contemplating a "West Bank First" strategy to bolster the position of President Abbas' Fatah party and the emergency government he assembled in the West Bank, which does not include any Hamas members. While some view this as a promising step forward in order to isolate Hamas, others warn that the strategy will further polarize the Palestinian people and result in greater violence in the future, undermining the confidence the Palestinian people have in a democratic process. A law expanding the government's ability to spy on Americans without court-approved warrants may expire Saturday, because House democrats are unhappy about a provision granting immunity to telephone companies that cooperated with the government in the surveillance. We speak with Wall Street Journal correspondent Siobhan Gorman. President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Malaki are forging a long term defense pact that would oblige US troops to protect Iraq for years to come. The president says he can approve the deal without congressional approval, but legal experts say this kind of deal has never been approved without Senate ratification. Boston Globe reporter, Charlie Savage, joins us with more. We also speak with retired Marine captain and former assistant secretary of defense, Bing West, who's just back from Iraq. West says the surge is working and U-S troops are doing great things in Iraq but the political situation there is still chaotic. Today we look at romance
