[description] Food and gas prices are soaring, foreclosures continue, and the Bush Administration says it is bringing back the 1-year treasury bill...another sign of an economy in trouble. Our guest is Nigel Gault, an economist with the Global Insight group. We talk about making ends meet with several people today. Mary Angela Miller is with Ohio State Medical Center and oversees the food service at the facility. Not only has food gone up, but the cost of many of her 'disposables' has increased too. Sam Calagione is president of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Delaware and he says he's competing with Chinese buyers willing to pay top dollar for hops grown in the Northwest. Bob Hingtgen is director of transportation for the Western Dubuque County Community School District in Iowa. Mr Hingtgen says his gas costs are up $50,000 this year — enough to pay for two teachers. And finally, Robert Betts, City Manager of East St Louis, Illinois, joins us to talk about potholes. The price of asphalt h

[description] An environmental disaster is unfolding in Southern Russia, after an oil tanker discharged 1,300 tons of heavy oil into the Kerch Strait which links the Sea of Azov with the Black Sea (a pathway used for oil exported from Russia and the Caspian basin to Europe). We talk to Fred Weir of the Christian Science Monitor. New York City's former mayor is leading his rivals for the GOP presidential nomination by double digits in national polls. We'll examine Giuliani's record in New York City with Wayne Barrett, senior editor of the Village Voice and author of "Grand Illusion." Plus, we'll get a snapshot of "America's Mayor" on the campaign trail from LA Times political reporter Peter Wallsten. For the first time in decades the United States Supreme Court is being asked to consider whether the Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights grants individuals the right to own guns. A lower court has ruled a strict handgun ban in Washington, D.C. unconstitutional, and the District of Columbia a

[description] Commander of US Forces in Baghdad, Major General Joseph Fil, says Al Qaeda is on the run in Iraq and has all but disappeared from Baghdad. The general also says that the troop surge has led to an 80 percent drop in murders and 70 percent fewer improvised bombs since violence peaked in June. We talk to Damien Cave of the NY Times about what those numbers mean for the average Iraqi, and whether it is a sign of one victory for the US. In the middle of the California desert the U.S. military has built a number of fake Iraqi villages and filled them with Iraqi-American actors all in the effort to help train troops bound for Iraq under the most realistic conditions possible as they train to conduct house to house searches and detect improvised explosive devices. We talk with Glenn Zorpette, a reporter with Spectrum Radio, the broadcast edition of IEEE magazine, who spent several days at Fort Irwin watching troops train using the latest techniques and technologies.
