State House leaders are responding with silence to a request from Sen. Edward Kennedy to change state law so that it would allow the governor to appoint a temporary senator if Kennedy could not complete his term. The new GI bill has resulted in a rise of applications at state schools in Massachusetts. It is the first update to veterans education benefits since 1944, allowing every eligible veteran or a member of their family to attend a public college or university, free, for four years.

In anticipation of a heavy flu season, including a resurgence of H1N1, public health officials are now preparing for how to deal with the expected spike in the virus. The Massachusetts public health department approved a regulation letting dentists, pharmacists, paramedics, nursing students and medical students administer flu vaccines as a way to allow as many people to get vaccinated as quickly as possible.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver has died at Cape Cod Hospital. The 88-year-old sister of Sen. Ted Kennedy and President John F. Kennedy is perhaps best known as founder of the Special Olympics, an organization she founded in 1968 in part because of her mentally disabled sister Rosemary.
