New England Regional Council of Carpenters Apprenticeship Instructor Dave Leonardi and Bob Bertrand, foreman on the job, working for Archer Corporation, a construction partner on the Carpenters Center, talk about some of the apprentice finish work being done at the Carpenters Center. One apprentice, Duaine Doyle, even got hired on by Archer Corporation, for his hard work. Carpenters Center Steward Desmond Roach (Local 33) gives us an update on the progress of the Carpenters Center building from the past couple of months. The glass panels in the atrium are almost finished, the exterior paneling is nearly finished, and flooring/finish work has begun in the interior of the building. The Center is still slated to open in January, 2010.

Floorcoverers from Local 2168 have been working with Alleghany Contract Flooring on the second floor of the new Carpenters Center. Local 2168 Floorcoverer Paul Pappalardo walks us through the process, which involves the use of self-leveling cement to ensure a flat and level surface before all flooring work is completed. On Thursday, October 29th, 2009, union carpenters, along with hundreds of other trades workers, rallied in front of the State House in support of legislature that would allow gambling in the state of Massachusetts. If this law is passed, the construction of destination casinos will provide thousands of jobs for Massachusetts residents.

On October 1-3, 2009, the New England Regional Council of Carpenters hosted their annual Apprenticeship Expo and Contest at their training center in Millbury, MA. Contests were held in general carpentry, interior systems, interior finish, floor covering, and concrete forms. Presentations were also offered by the Piledrivers Local 56 and Carpenters Local 94. The expo was attended by participating locals and their apprentices, contractors, and vocational students from local school systems.
