Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, a fire broke out at the back wall of the Sandpiper Inn, an 18-unit lodging house located at 165 Nantasket Avenue in Hull. The fire is under investigation by both the Hull Fire Dept. and the state fire marshal. Firefighter William Hatfield told The Patriot Ledger that the door to tenant Mary Orlando's third-floor room had to be forced open with an ax when she was unable to open it. Orlando was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and was put on oxygen. Firefighter Anthony Simmons was reportedly released from the hospital after treatment for an ankle injury. The Red Cross assisted tenants with their immediate needs. The property manager for Heritage Management Co., Inc. Michael B. Glass, told The Ledger that there was smoke and water damage, but little structural damage -- by Cathleen Jeffrey
